Description
The Total Solar Eclipse of 21 August 2017 as viewed from Lake Barkley State Park near Cadiz, Kentucky. This is a 5-image HDR (High Dynamic Range) photo that utilized both over-and-underexposed images to bring out details not only in the Solar Corona (the million+ degree solar atmosphere), but you can also just make out some surface features on the face of the Moon - - despite the fact that it is silhouetted by the Sun.
(The reason features on the Moon are visible can be teased out of an image like this is that there is enough light shining back onto the Moon's surface from the parts of our planet that AREN'T eclipsed!)
The bright star Regulus, in the constellation of Leo the Lion can also be seen to the left of the eclipsed Sun.
