Artist's Description
The Sunshine Skyway connects Pinellas County (St Pete) to Manatee County (Bradenton/Sarasota) in Florida. Opened in 1987, it replaced the OLD span which was hit by the freighter Summit Venture on May 9, 1980. That horrific accident killed 35 people when 1261 feet of the main span plunged 150 feet into Tampa Bay.
The 'low' parts of the old bridge have been converted to fishing piers, and the south (Manatee County side) pier is now the longest in the world. It is also the spot from which I took the photograph.
